Angela Evelyn Bassett, an American actress is well known for her performance in films and on television since the mid 1980s. Bassett has been awarded a variety of accolades like the Golden Globe Award as well as sixteen NAACP Image Award. She has been recognized by the media and for her television performances since the early 1980s. The awards she has won comprise two Golden Globe Awards, sixteen NAACP Image Awards as well as nominations for Academy Awards and Primetime Emmy Awards. Bassett was raised at Winston-Salem North Carolina, raised by her aunt and Uncle in New York New York. Bassett along with her sister who were about five years old, moved out of New York and into St. Petersburg to live with the mother of their divorced father. In high school, Bassett watched John Steinbeck's drama Of Mice and Men starring James Earl Jones and decided that she wanted to become an actor. Yale University New Haven Connecticut awarded her a bachelor's degree (1980) with a focus on African American study, and an honorary doctorate (1983) at the Yale School of Drama. Courtney B. Vance was also an actor at Yale. The couple got married in 1997.
